New Orleans Saints tight end Foster Moreau was devastated after dropping a potential game-tying touchdown pass in the end zone with under a minute remaining in Thursday night's loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
"It's a dark place to be," Moreau said after the game. "I let my team down. I let the city down. I'm just so sorry."
Moreau's drop came on third-and-goal from the 10-yard line with the Saints trailing 31-24. Quarterback Derek Carr threw a perfect pass to Moreau in the back of the end zone, but Moreau couldn't get his hands around it.
The Saints went for it on fourth down, but Carr's pass to Chris Olave fell incomplete, and the Jaguars held on for the win.
Moreau said he has never felt so bad after a game.
"I've never felt like this after a game," he said. "I'm just so sorry to my teammates and to the city of New Orleans."
Moreau's teammates rallied around him after the game and offered him their support.
"We all make mistakes," quarterback Derek Carr said. "We all do things we wish we could take back. But Foster is a great teammate and a great player. He's going to bounce back from this."
Head coach Dennis Allen also defended Moreau after the game.
"Foster is a good player," Allen said. "He's made a lot of big plays for us this year. He just made a mistake tonight. It happens to everyone."
Moreau said he plans to put the drop behind him and focus on the next game.
"I'm going to learn from this mistake and move on," he said. "I'm still a young player, and I'm going to keep working to improve."
