18 years after she disappeared, Natalee Holloway's family finally has answers

Natalee Holloway disappeared on a high school graduation trip to Aruba in 2005. She was last seen leaving a bar with Joran van der Sloot, a local man. Van der Sloot was questioned in the disappearance but never prosecuted. A judge declared Holloway dead, but her body was never found.

In 2011, van der Sloot was convicted of murdering Stephany Flores, a Peruvian woman. He was sentenced to 28 years in prison. In 2018, van der Sloot was extradited to the United States to face charges of wire fraud and extortion.

As part of a plea deal, van der Sloot agreed to tell Beth Holloway, Natalee's mother, how her daughter died and where her body was stashed. On October 18, 2023, van der Sloot pleaded guilty to the wire fraud and extortion charges. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

After the hearing, Beth Holloway spoke to reporters outside the courthouse. She said that van der Sloot had told her that he had given Natalee alcohol and drugs, and that she had passed out. He then said that he had buried her body in a dune.

Beth Holloway said that she was grateful for the closure that van der Sloot's confession had given her family. She also said that she hoped that Natalee's body would be found so that she could be given a proper burial.
